Keep in mind that temperatures in South Georgia stay in the low 60s in December. So there’s no need for those thick winter coats or heavy sweaters. There’s also not much likelihood of snowstorms or icy roads, so enjoy the sandy beaches and blue skies here.

And there will be plenty of yuletide activities to celebrate. That includes the opportunity to check out holiday lights and to do some holiday shopping at the annual Pier Village Holiday Market. That’s a great opportunity to check out paintings, pottery, jewelry and a whole lot more.

Holiday shopping with an ocean breeze rolling in and the waves right behind you – doesn’t that sound like the perfect scene for holiday cheer?

And St. Simons Island is also the place to be for a grand holiday buffet or meal. Holiday meals at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort are legendary in South Georgia. This is a popular spot for your family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, and there are holiday decorations throughout the resort.

Because if you’re staying on the island during the holidays, you can also enjoy some of the special holiday activities close by in the city of Brunswick. Below, you’ll find some the upcoming highlights of the St. Simons Island holiday events calendar for this holiday season.

Dec. 1-2

You can see how Christmas was celebrated a century ago — on a Southern rice plantation during the 1850s — with Christmas at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation. Located right off St. Simon’s Island, in the marshlands of the Altamaha River, this platform has been preserved to illustrate Georgia’s coastal history and natural beauty.

By visiting the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, guests can see how Christmas was celebrated a century ago by taking a candlelit stroll down the old carriage road and enjoying candlelit tours of this antebellum plantation house. There will also be hot wassail and cookies being served, Civil War reenactors, Christmas carols and a special appearance by Santa Claus.

Dec. 2

The classic annual Brunswick Christmas Parade, which features more than 100 floats, vehicles, walking groups and marching band units as they make their way into the heart of the Old Town National Register Historic District.

On the same day is the 8th annual Christmas Boat Parade of Lights, which starts at Brunswick Landing Marina, and is sponsored by the Golden Isles Sailing Club. On Dec. 8-10, the Golden Isles Arts & Humanities will be presenting a production of “A Christmas Carol” featuring a cast of local actors performing the show as it would have been done in the 1940s as a live radio drama – only they’re doing it in front of a live audience, with period costumes and unique sound effects.

Dec. 9-10

The Jill Stanford Dance Center presents “The Grinch” at the Glynn Academy Auditorium in Brunswick, a show featuring young dancers celebrating and bringing us all into the Christmas spirit.

There’s a lot of enjoyable Yuletide cheer to enjoy on the St. Simons Island holiday events calendar, and you’ll marvel as you drive around the island and see the beautiful homes lit up for the holidays. It’s a charming island and it really comes to life during the holiday season.

And it helps quite a bit that the weather in South Georgia is still delightfully pleasant in December, and it sure won’t feel like you’re in a northern state in the dead of winter.

Georgia’s Golden Isles is renowned for its natural beauty and lush barrier islands. This is an area originally discovered by Spanish explorers looking for gold. But even centuries later, St. Simons Island remains surrounded by stretches of marshland and rivers that are home to birds and fish making their way to the Atlantic Ocean. St. Simons is an ideal place for enjoying pristine beaches, genuine Southern hospitality, and remarkably preserved historical attractions.
